If a user is interested in reading selected articles or the ones he is interested to have knowledge, then the excerpts will help him ease his job sorting out the needed in a single look. I have seen many blogs with 10-15 posts on a main page. I personally think that the ratio of posts should be low and your matter and page visibility and easiness should enable a user to feel interested in clicking for other similar posts. What do you think? If you have gold, (comparison of content with gold) hidden deep inside and then people will come with referrals and dig deep into your pages to read more... and find them I think more importance for excerpts goes to user ease and interest for the topic.
