By trade I am a Entrepreneur, Marketer, Motivator, Business Consultant, and Writer. But none of that equates the status of an SEO expert. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the SEO school of hard knocks. Marketers by nature always test a variety of things online. So anything I am sharing with you regarding search engine optimization is based on a lot of testing.
1. Perma What ?!
One of the first things you should add to your blog (via htaacces file) is the correct permalinks. Permalinks help search engines with indexing. I was so busy telling myself on one of my main blogs (DarrenMonroe.com) that it was going to just be an update blog that I didn’t follow that rule. Speaking as a marketer though I think Wordpress should have a popup when you first enter your admin area so you have a checklist.
2. Attention Marketers SEO plugin is your friend.
The SEO plugin is great! This plugin allows you to gain better ranking. Don’t take for granted the ability to add a title, description, and keyword in each and every page and post of your blog. Many marketers begin to focus on the copywriting but we forget the aspect of gaining search engine ranking involves having the right words and phrases to crawl. That doesn’t mean you have to write for a search engine. Even as a marketer I know that. However you should habitually add title, keywords, descriptions, and phrases to your articles.
3. Duplicate Article postings are Cool! Er ah NO.
Not cool at all and can get you penalized by search engines or at the very least weak rankings for that post. Though in traditional marketing it makes sense to send press releases. Online sending the same PR can be search engine suicide. So what is a marketer to do?
This should bring in enough authority and links to your press release so Google or any other search engine doesn’t confuse your article (original content) with anyone else who might re-post. The truth is that people in the press will repost because they don’t want to write a whole story.
But explain the penalties of reposting non original content via search engines. And Ask any media you are sending it to if they could create an original headline title and see if they can write a short paragraph in addition to the reposting.
Now this doesn’t guarantee that Google and the gang wont penalize you. But they might think twice since your media did the following.
4. Comment on blogs like you were talking in front of a camera. Not like you have write a small essay due to your school teacher in 5 minutes.
Does this comment seem familiar? “Great post I really like that it was really good.” You don’t just want a link back because it helps search engines. You want someone to think your comment was interesting enough to visit your site. Bloggers often suggest commenting on blogs. Fewer discuss establishing a reason for someone to actually click through.
5. Headline Titles matter but Picture this……….
I wrote an article titled “Get Paid 1 Million Dollars to Scratch Your Butt and Sniff”. And between the one million dollar picture and the headlines that article is listed as number one across over 50 million searches.
No big discovery that headlines in your title are important. But don’t focus on the SEO factor so much that you miss your chance to gain organic traffic. For example if you enter the phrase one million dollars in Google you will see a few pictures of money that will show up. As I am writing this article one of those first page pictures links to my site out of 34 million searches. The lesson learned? Don’t just carefully name your title but also consider adding images and name them carefully as well. Images can bring you just as much traffic as the headlines and keywords in your content.
I didn’t design it that way. Actually it was a funny play on words. I wrote the post to address those “get paid one million dollar articles.” You know the ones. They always turn out to be scams to get your email and eventually (if they are lucky) your money. So I wrote a clever short article that got search engine ranking by it’s title alone of over 24 million searches.
Conclusion
Marketers pay attention to setting up your blog permalinks. Also make sure you have original comments on blogs as well as content. Use the SEO plugin. And begin to focus on your images for traffic as well as your content.
And on a last note for anyone reading this SEO, Marketer, Blogger or just plain child of God. Have FUN! Again that article I wrote that ended up on the first pages of a combined 50 million searches was for edutainment (education + entertainment).

You have written some very useful information. I have been using All in SEO plugin for some time and find it quite useful. Similarly choice of permalinks is important. I choose one in the beginning which I want to change now, but can’t do that since it will impact the already indexed pages.

Sidh yes John thats why I wanted to write this because alas DarrenMonroe.com has the same issue. However the point of the “get paid one million dollars…” article is to show you can still get ranking despite that initial issue.

Hi Mani,
Good advice, these are certainly important pointers for anyone blogging. I’ve not been blogging long really, but picking up tips and advice where I can, and may I add, certainly enjoying it.

I am Sorry Mani, but I question the value of this guest post. 1) Its the same old crap that people have been posting about SEO for years, much of which is false. 2) Why would anyone take SEO from this guy, the main reason why an SEO would write a guest post is to get a targeted anchor link back to their site, this guy has targeted the term “Learn Entrepreneurship Online” which has such a low search volume it doesn’t even register on Google adwords tool as having traffic. I sorry but this isn’t good SEO advice. What the article should talk about is the value of targeting keywords that will bring you traffic, and how you target those keywords…. you build links that have those keywords in the anchor. Simple! I am not trying to make a scene, I just think there is a lot of bad advice in this article and your readers should know that.

Hi Simon first let me say thank you for your feedback and to let you know I like your site.
Regarding 1) I think the issue here Simon is that you really haven’t grasp the viewpoint of my article. Which is that of a marketer NOT an SEO expert. In fact in the first few sentences I explain where I got my SEO degree from (LOL).
For a SEO expert it should be entertaining to read a guy who messed up and admits it to the world wide web (LOL). And to a new person just starting out with blogs it should be a valuable lesson that they can learn from without repeating. You know a sort of learn from my mistake thing.
Why anyone would publicly display their mistakes and be called “false” is beyond me and quite frankly Simon in many ways I wish they were false LOL! Kind of like that guy that slips and falls on his face in front of everyone then writes about it. Does he want that to be false? YOU BET LOL! But alas its not.
Regarding 2) Your right about the guest post…partially. You see I think you missed the fact that I do have other sources for traffic besides search engines and Mani know this. Also I think you miss that it is not just the ranking but the nature of the post (writing style). Again I am writing from a marketer who made a mistake not a top notch SEO expert.
Lastly Simon you said “What the article should talk about is the value of targeting keywords that will bring you traffic, and how you target those keywords”
So… hmmm did you read the little part where I used pics to get to the top position of a multi million search AND Adwords traffic (22,000 searches)? My point here is that you can focus on more than just your title tag but through your articles.
Also I chose my title “Learn Entrepreneurship Online” because I liked the term not the amount of search. As I said in this article you shouldn’t write just for SEO but for fun.
Besides I am perplexed why you would talk about my main slogan since on your site phrase “We love Wordpress” has as you say “such a low search volume it doesn’t even register on Google adwords tool as having traffic.”
Or did you use that term because it was FUN? Hmmm nothing wrong with that
Thanks Simon look forward to learning more from you.

Well said Darren. Sometimes we should criticize such people indirectly.
For an example, if Simon is writing the same topic. What will he include in author note? Simply “The author of Pingable.org:: We love Wordpress”? What does it mean here? Nothing as like what he said.
Even those 2 semicolons in that title is meant for SEO?
Simon! Don’t blame others to make yourself flame.

BlogPro….I missed the point that Darren wasn’t claiming to be and SEO expert, which is why my comment was a bit harsh, however my advice stands…I was giving advice on how you can use a guest article for SEO purposes. Your comment about the title on my site is random….I post to that site once every few months yet I have an alexa rating of 50,000, I get plenty of search traffic. BlogPro has an Alexa rating of 700,000…. in other words, you don’t get search traffic. The semicolons are to spread out the title for design reasons not SEO. If you want some advice….all the keywords in your title of blogPro are a waste of time, you will never rank for any of those terms becuase they have too much compeition. Target better keywords and you might imporve your organic traffic.

Well Simon! I am just surprised after seeing your reply. You don’t know anything about my blog at all. We just have changed from our well known blog to this new domain – BlogrPro.Com.
FYI, we have changed from a domain which stood at an Alexa rank of 1.3lacs. And I know all those black hat techniques to increase my blog’s alexa ranking from dead end to top within a month. And Alexa ranking is nothing to consider in SEO. See your site’s index in Google and blame yourself for indexing all those monthly archive pages and other things without knowing what SEO is meant for.
And now check (ur fav) alexa rank of my blog and see how fast it is growing than urs.
And how do u know that we don’t get any search engine traffic. You are assuming a lot about u and us.
I don’t want to reveal any traffic info about our blog. We are getting around 78% traffic from those Search engines only.
And all of your blog pages don’t even have a meta keywords list. But u still claim that u know SEO.
And don’t ever think a beginner can’t compete with an expert. I am still not blaming you . I am very much surprised with your knowledge of such things.
Don’t believe that having such alexa ranking means your or my blog is so great.
And you didn’t even answer for Mr.Darren’s question. Simply escaped with a thank!

I am not going to waste my time…but meta tags don’t mean anything in SEO these days. Alexa can be BS, but most of the time it is a good indication….I just think you are full of Sh*t and I am not going to waste my time!

It is especially important for Wordpress blogs to get the permalinks right, since the URL structure is so unfriendly by nature. Also, any SEO plugins you use are a huge help as they can help you boost your rank by at least 20% if utilized correctly.
