Call it black hat or grey hat, but these sure are forbidden things when it comes to SEO. If you do it, the heaven will fall on you and the Google gods will curse you for your deeds.
So what are they ? (I know you know this better than me, but remember..this is all basics for the beginners, so if you know more, feel free to add.)
Never ever hide text in your code. Either with CSS or otherwise. Its bad karma and even though it might look tempting, its fatal. I find it interesting that there are websites with elaborate tutorials still on this.
Dangerous stuff. Basically it means showing two different content to search engines and actual visitors. But since its “discovery” webmasters have devised various ways to cloak and the ways are numerous (and complicated.)
But one thing is intriguing – why put your time and energy into such complicated things, when you can do it the genuine way with half the effort ?
I bet everyone knew this. Google doesn’t like it because it kind of “affects” their algorithm in a manipulative way and it hinders the right for the common man to know things fairly on search engines while searching for information.
So buy or sell – Ah ..Ah.. No says Google.
What are the other things that you think will get you bad karma ?

IMO commenting on other blogs with keywords instead of real names is a bad thing. It might be good SEO wise, but a comment is much more than a back link, rt?

No,
Google will not consider it as hidden links, as google shows such dropdowns in the text only version of there cache.

Good advice on everything here.
I would add this about hidden text, If you have a custom website, with a powerful custom search feature built in, you may want to use an include or other method to display this feature.
A spider may read every value in your search drop down boxes, which would then increase your word count and lower your keyword density. For example, if you have a drop down for country, with every nation in the world as a value, you may want to go about displaying that on your page a different way to avoid saturating your good on page content,
Content is king

Nice checklist! My previous blog has badly got a penalty from Google for hidden text. I didn’t tend to cloak, I just hide the text then show it as a popup menu when readers hover the mouse.

Good tips..
What’s also important when it come to SEO is that Google ‘loves’ links that are relevant to your page and that’s why the google ‘gurus’ will give bad results if you increase your linkbait overnight… it’s quite likely that you have acquired those by not-so-legitmate means (purchasing that is). You might be interested in our SEO management tool at http://www.analyticsseo.com that let’s you piggyback off your competitor’s link building activity…and it’s legal

Very good information here. The bit about the search box drop down menus diluting your keywords was sort of frightening… Can anyone elaborate a bit more on this? How would one go about setting up a search function that doesn’t have this flaw?
