Fortunately or unfortunately, it was only a short wave. Directory submissions no longer worked and people started to realize that the magic won’t work anymore.

Now, when social media happened, the magicians turned to social bookmarking. Insted of directory submissions, this time it was social bookmarking sites and they promised (still do) 2k social bookmarks for prices as low as $50. People plunged in, some lost it, some recovered.

Essentially, social bookmarking is not supposed to go automated, technically it ends up as spam. Some websites and profiles may save themselves but success won’t reach those who doesn’t understand how crowd behaves and how to make them happy.
