Found an evil tweak the other day, one blogger was displaying his feedburner status on the main page and the number shown on the stats was strange - because this is a regular blog i visit, I can’t remember this blog(can’t disclose the name) having this many subscribers at any time. Curious, I took a closer look at the feedburner status and found that the image is a fake.

It was photoshopped and showed a fancy number - the image was but linked to the feed url. At first look, nobody would suspect at the stats. The numbers had a smudgy edge - which is what pulled me towards it.

I was wondering if you guys would support this or not? It is true that, if a blog can flaunt it’s subscriber count, then the visitors have a natural tendency to follow and get subscribed. But is faking the subscriber count, ethically correct? Though the blog will get more subscribers, wouldn’t it be the same as lying to them?

I woud like to think that people subscribe to a Blog because of the quality of the content and not just because it has an apparently large readership.

Most of us struggle to get a decent readership in the early days but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing because at the same time we’re still learning, experiment and making all those common mistakes - imagine starting with a huge readership from the outset - you’d probably lose more readers than you’d gain.

I think it effects the thinking of the people a bit. But, if you don’t deliver the good content, then people will unsubscribe from the reader too.

Its very easy to fake readership and there is no need to use photoshop for that. From feedburner its just a gif image. For example :
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~fc/johnchowdotcom

will give me the feed count of johnchow.com … and I can just embed the link to display it my blog, will give me a readership of 7800+ readers. But it cant last long coz if someone discovers it , its gonna leave a bad impression about the blog.

Faking readship can increase in subscription, but you should make sure, that the feed count you are faking , you actually deserve it . Good Content good readership :D

You are right Kanak. I learned about faking feedburner from Kumibo(cashquests.com) last day where she reported on one of the websites she reviewed itself was faking the feed of another website. Poor show from these bloggers.

I wouldn’t do that. I don’t think that my readers would subscribe only because I’d have a high number on my feedburner.

Yea, i wouldent do that, quality is the key.
