.edu backlinks are “supposed” to perform well in your link building strategy. And I think it makes sense because we know how difficult it is to get an edu backlink (meaning a backlink from a domain with .edu TLD).
Mostly .edu sites are universities or colleges and they only link to valid resources like wikipedia. So if someone linked to you, that would mean something.
Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of crowd sourcing happening in many .edu portals which has been exploited by SEOs, who paste links in the vain hope of getting some link juice. These projects normally are blogs/wikis etc.
In my opinion, links from an open wiki (with .edu domain) is as good as a normal wiki only. I mean if everyone pasted their links on the wiki, Google would treat is as spam right ? So what good is it ?
Anyway the post is not about spamming the edu wikis. For those who are curious about finding the edu links pointing to their websites, here’s the search query that’ll help you.
Go to Yahoo and search for this replacing with your domain name.
linkdomain:yoursite.com +site:.edu

Yup, you said rite. The value of .edu sites are being decreased by the overuse of such great resources by many SEO’s. I from now on, its better to just concentrate on natural link building techniques.

That was very informative ! I tried the command and found that yahoo showed 2 sites linking to my domain. But when I opened those sites, I couldn’t find the said link to my domain . Don’t have an idea why !

Hey. I went to Yahoo! and entered the search query just like to said. Wow I have 13 .edu backlinks to my blog. How great is that.
I will assume that those links were “dofollow”…No? Well I am just curious. I always assumed that search engine bots ignored .edu backlinks, thinking – perhaps wrongly – that the bots would ignore them due to the “rel-”nofollow” attribute.

Yahoo counts the nofollow links as well unlike Google, so you’ll have to check those links manually to see if they are dofollow or not.

These are excellent pointers and thanks for showing us the Google operator. Since Yahoo! and Bing count no-follow it will have tremendous benefit to many. Remember to leave meaningful comments and keep it ethical.
