What are your image optimization SEO strategies ?

Most of us are bloggers and we write a lot. We do plug in images in between articles too. Although we know the basics of image SE optimization, the results are varied based on what domain you are on, and what your advantages are.

I normally follow a set of principles for image optimization like these -

- Always plug a small-medium size image.
- Follow a standard size image like the one above, which goes well with small and big articles alike.
- Keep the file names as descriptive and SE friendly as possible.
- Drop them amidst the content well.
- Keep their image file sizes low-medium for quick loading.
- Use ALT and Title attributes to it, with descriptive text (a plugin picks up the file name for it automatically.)
- If its a long article, sprinkle it with more than one image evenly. (Mostly on other sites not DSB)

But do you follow any particular practices for better results ? Something that you tried yourself and gave you good results ? Please share.

    I’m only just learning about image optimisation, but do have a question about hotlinking and how it may affect ranking in google images.

    Example, one of my sites has an image of a small furry animal and a post which references this animal a lot. The image is the first result in a google images search for the animal name, and appears as one of the images on a regular google web search for the same term. I get about 600 hits per day via this image.

    Recently someone has hotlinked to this image, so the image appears on their site and the code obviously links directly to the image at mydomain/myimage.jpg - there is no actual html link to the image or me from their site.

    What impact will this have on the google ranking?

    Does the fact it is pulling from my site make it slightly beneficial, or will the image search in google eventually show my image but link to their site?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Mani,

    Do you call a 38 KB image a small image..? Its ok as long as all your readers are on a broad band, but is it so..?

    When I use images I ask myself this question. “What value does that image add to my post? ” If the image is very relevant, I keep it big and fair. If it is just for some extra color to the post, I make them as small as possible ( small is only in size, never more than 15 KB, usually they are 300px square and above in pixels)

    I use the save for web in photoshop to do this. Try that for this image and you can have the image at 10Kb without any appreciable reduction in image quality…

    BTW, this kind of images that you use here have one advantage. People who scan your pages will quickly understand what the post is about, and maybe they will start reading right away. Kudos.. :)

    Image optimization is main and important part of SEO. Images are important to get traffic from “Image Search Result”.

    For one of my blog, i am getting daily 50+ visitors from Google Image Search.

    I am very careful about alt tag and name of images with suitable image name.

    i dont use both alt and title attributes.instead i go for the filename.iam not sure if that helps.

    Get your alt tags right and seo for pictures is well on the way to being a success…..not having images too big is also a must, as people tend to move on from slow loading pages.
