Sometimes, I feel that the emphasis on blogs and blogging have taken dangerous heights. Especially with someone who has to sell his products online. There’s enough and more information flowing around that says setting up a blog on your site is the “band aid” to your falling SERP ranks.
I should disagree with this statement. Not only because it sounds too easy and vague but also because it is wrong.
Most of my clients do have an old website, which has a falling SERPs record and are looking for a healing process. Some are still doing good while some have serious issues such as page not being indexed and “penalty like” issues.
Its a bit surprising when most of them suggest blogs as a solution. Probably from what they’ve heard over on the internet, but the expectations from a blog is just too much and hyped I must say !
Blogs do help in oiling back the machine but I’m seriously concerned over the “setting up a blog” part of it.
I strongly disagree that just by setting up a blog, some miracle is going to happen. No.
Blogs and social media should be embraced in the right way with lot of commitment and involvement. You should be able to “utilize” blogs and the social media channels to your benefit. You should still be able to deliver content frequently, should be able to connect with the audience and on top of all able to deliver quality without actually promoting your products directly. Its easy to piss off people with your content and in blogging its a bit too easy to. So you have to be really careful with it.
There’s a lot more to using blogging and social media as a platform to sell your products. It doesn’t end with setting up a blog, adding some meta keywords and waiting for the traffic to rush in.
Having said that blogs are good tools to bring in that much needed traffic rush and google juices to your failing site, if you use them effectively that is.
So essentially, setting up a blog is a good thing, but not definitely a quick solution. Its only a starting point and there’s quite a lot more to go. The time, effort and commitment required to bring in the traffic is almost as equal as in a normal site.
The difference is that if you have been riding a Merc earlier, with blogs you’re on a Bugatti Veyron or something !

Personally I feel that if a product or a web service has a blog, we keep on monitoring their blogs (through aggregators). We will not go each and every time to a site if they have anything new coming up

Hi Mani,
In my opinion it does not matter weather it’s a blog or a website. If you know how search engines work, you will know how to optimize your web content. Be it a blog or a website. With that said, blogs are something that is constantly discussed about on the internet and it a more better and lively means to interact with the readers bringing in more visitors to it. if you are a product or a service provider, i guess a website with extensive information should optimize it well. But then again, that’s just my opinion.
Cheers,

Mani,
I beleive that blogs ( when used correctly ) are a great vehicle for updating your web site. In my opinion, the search algorythm is steering more and more towards sites that have up-to-date fresh content.
Adding a blog to your web site and feeding the latest blogs onto your homepage can be a very effective way of maintaining freshly updated content.
I’ve stumbled across a lot of web sites that have had a blog slapped on, and the company don’t maintain the blog, therfore it defeats the object, and becomes stale.
How often do you guys think is a recommended quantity to blog on a web site?

I always uses Joomla for a CMS and myblog component for making the blog. Wordpress is also good, but it I have many sites with Joomla 1.5, so its better for handling.
The templates I organize buying from templateclubs – a good structured site is this here(in german but well structured):
templateclubs.de
For myself I always want to provide more informations on the website so a CMS is better and if you want to enhance the features Joomla is a great software what have a lot programmed ready – open source or commercial enhancements.

Regardless of whether you have a blog or a more conventional website, certain basic SEO principles apply across the board. One has to work at it the whole time to ensure success though, and more so with a blog, as regular fresh content is key.

It’s pretty clear to me that my blog has dramatically helped my SEO. Of course, I have to be careful to practice good SEO techniques within the blog itself… but no doubt about it, the blog has the some of the best rankings within my site.
Our site is relatively new (Jan 2009), but has already attracted visitors to our CRM space.
Thanks for the post.

I recommend that all my clients setup blogs. This gives them a new way to communicate with customers and prospects. Some already have brochure web pages and these don’t allow them to truly connect with customer and prospects. Also, it has definitely helped them with their SEO.
Good Luck!
